NEWBIGIN CENTENARY
Bishop James Edward Lesslie Newbigin was born on 8th December 1909 and died on 30th January 1998. He was an outstanding figure in the twentieth-century ecumenical movement. As a Church of Scotland missionary, evangelist and preacher, mission All strategist, social visionary and person of prayer he played pioneering roles in the united Church of South India and in the World Council of Churches. After forty years in India, his last twenty-five years were devoted to addressing the spiritual malaise of the secularised West.
Churches Together in Britain and Ireland is pleased to announce that it is to mark the centenary of the birth of Bishop Lesslie Newbigin, the distinguished and influential missionary, ecumenist and theologian. A Day Conference will be held at Queen's College Birmingham, 11th December 2009, 10.00 - 16.30. The Conference will include two lectures by Dr Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, Professor of Systematic Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. Dr Kärkkäinen will speak on the theme of 'The Church in the Post-Christian Society Between Modernity and Late Modernity: L.Newbigin's Post-Critical Missional Ecclesiology'.
